This cute and fun Butterfly Suncatcher is the perfect Springtime craft. It requires a little bit of prep work, but is mess-free, easy to make, and looks beautiful on a window.

The lamination effect of the contact paper on this craft makes it sturdy and will last for years to come. Hang it up each Spring as a reusable window decal!

Hang these on a window or sliding glass door with a good amount of sunlight and let the colors shine through. This craft is perfect for any spring or summer kid’s event, butterfly-themed party, or a fun activity to do at home with your kids.

This week in my Bible lesson I’m teaching my kids about 2 Corinthians 5:17 and how we are all a “new creation” in Christ.

These butterfly suncatchers are a great way to remind your kids of that message as you talk about the amazing change that caterpillars go through to become butterflies.

If you’re looking for more butterfly-themed crafts, snacks, activities, or the corresponding Bible lesson I mentioned, check out this week’s Weekly Fun Plan: A New Creation.

Supplies:

Steps:

  • First, let’s start with the prep work you may want to do for your child if they are younger. Start by printing off my Butterfly Cutout PDF.
  • Next, take some scissors and carefully cut out the butterfly image. This will be your stencil.
  • Measure out a piece of contact paper big enough to cover the entire butterfly shape and double it. Fold the piece in half to make a crease for later.
  • Cut some 1” squares of tissue paper in various colors.
  • When your child is ready to do the craft, trace the butterfly image onto the clear side of one-half of your contact paper. Carefully peel off the paper back of that side, and place it on a table sticky side up.
  • Next, place different colored pieces of tissue paper onto the contact paper, be sure to cover all the open spaces inside your butterfly outline. Be careful as contact paper is very sticky.
  • Once filled in with tissue paper, peel off the back of your second half of contact paper and carefully fold it on top of your artwork sealing it in place. This will create a laminated look.
  • Next, take some scissors and cut off the excess contact paper around your butterfly image.
  • Using your butterfly cutout template or freehanding it, draw the shape of your butterfly’s body on some black construction paper. Then, cut out the body. You can also create some antennae for your butterfly during this step.
  • Tape your body onto your new suncatcher in the correct place.
  • Now you’re ready to tape it up on a window and let the light shine through!
