Weekly Fun Plan: One of a Kind

Welcome to this week’s Weekly Fun Plan: One of a Kind! If you haven’t already I recommend you read my introductory blog post “Faith-filled Fun: What Is It? And Why I Started It”. That post will give you some background into this blog and a little more in-depth explanation of my Weekly Fun Plans and how to use them. 

This Week’s Theme: One of a Kind

Growing up in Michigan I am all too familiar with the concept of snow. It may be cold and a pain to drive in but it’s also fun to play in, and incredibly beautiful. So when it comes down to it I do love snow! Another fun thing about snow is the uniqueness of each snowflake. The fact that no two snowflake formations are exactly alike, has always been one of those reminders in nature for me that points to such an amazing and loving creator. If God can take that much detail and put it into each snowflake, how much more detail and care does He put into us?

This week’s Bible lesson will focus on how God has created each one of us specially and uniquely just like a snowflake. So of course, all our craft, snack, and activity ideas are going to be “snowflake” themed. If you try anything in this week’s plan don’t forget to share your experiences on social media! Bible Lesson: What to Read or Watch this week

Since this week we are covering the topic of how we are all “one of a kind”, here are some great resources to read/watch:

If you have young children (ages 0-8): 

Read/Go through the following lesson together:

Did you know that every snowflake that falls from the sky is unique? That means every snowflake is beautiful and different in its own way!

No two snowflakes are the same, just like no two people are the same. We were all created by God with unique talents, gifts, skills, likes & dislikes, and experiences and that’s what makes us so special.

At the same time, even though we are all different, what we have in common is we are all created by the same God and made in his image. And when we all work together using all our unique talents and gifts we can make a big difference. Just like when all those tiny unique snowflakes stick together they can make a big difference. If you put a bunch of snowflakes together, you can build a snowman, make a snow fort, or even make a big hill to sled down.

God made each of us unique for a reason. Every one of us is special and beautiful and when we work together we can use our differences to work together and make a big impact on God’s kingdom!

Now let’s see what the Bible says about this topic and Read the following verses:

  • Ephesians 2:10
  • Psalm 139:14
  • 1 Corinthians 12:12-31

If you have older children/teens (ages 9-18):

  • Read or have them read the same verses listed above in their own personal study time and take notes on what they feel God is trying to teach them through these verses.

Bible Lesson: Questions to Ask Your Kids/Discuss this week

If you read the recommended Bible verses or watched the YouTube videos your kids should be able to answer this week’s question:

How did God make me like a snowflake? Answer: God made me special & unique!

If you have little ones (ages 0-8):

I would focus on that one question this week, and work on having them memorize the answer. Ask them that same question every morning or evening and see if they can remember the answer. 

If you have older children (ages 9-18):

Here are some additional questions you can discuss with them throughout the week:

  • Why did God make us all different?
  • What makes me special & unique?
  • How can I use my unique talents to serve God and others?

Bible Lesson: Memory Verse

Memorizing scripture is vital to teaching our children at a young age. Recalling and reciting scripture that they’ve memorized will help them as they grow and go through trials in life. It will also encourage them, equip them to go out and be little disciples of Jesus, and strengthen their faith as they age.

This week let’s have your kids work on memorizing Psalm 139:14. This is a longer verse, so if you think it would be easier for your kids, work on memorizing just the first half of the verse “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made”.

Memorizing scripture is so much easier for kids if you can find a way to make it fun. Here are some different ideas to try as a family to help memorize this week’s verse:

  • Come up with some simple motions for each word of the verse and make a cheer or dance out of it.
  • Come up with your own melody and create a song out of it.
  • Make it a game. Start by saying one word or phrase of the verse at a time and have your kids repeat after you until you’ve gotten through the whole verse. Then repeat the process saying the words differently every time. Examples: slow, fast, in a silly voice, quiet, loud, etc.

Once your child/children have got it, I recommend practicing reciting the verse each morning over breakfast or before they leave for school and maybe even again before bed. Make it a part of your routine and you’ll be amazed at how fast they will begin to pick it up.

Supplies needed for this week’s activities

Recipe: Pretzel Marshmallow Snowflakes

This week’s recipe is an easy sweet treat that both you and your kids will enjoy. Use your creativity to create as many different snowflake formations as you can come up with.

Instructions: 
  • Using small pretzel sticks and a combination of regular and mini marshmallows, poke them together to make various snowflake shapes and enjoy!

Crafts:

For this week’s crafts, we are making “Watercolor Snowflake Art” and “Salt Snowflake Art”. Both crafts are super simple and are a fun reminder of the unique beauty of each snowflake and each child.

Salt Snowflake Art:

For our second craft this week, we have this fun 3D Salt Snowflake Art. This craft is easy to make and your kids will love sprinkling the salt and the crystallized look of the finished project! Follow the link for an easy step-by-step guide.

Activities:

With our theme this week “One of a Kind” here are a few extra ideas for activities to do with your children:

  • Mix together baking soda and shaving cream for an easy 2-ingredient fake snow recipe for your sensory bin.
  • Go outside and play in the real snow (if you have any)
  • Look in a mirror and take turns naming all the unique/wonderful things about yourselves.
  • Fold and cut coffee filters or paper to make some classic paper snowflakes.

Parenting Tip of the Week:

Our identity and our children’s identity should always come from Christ first and foremost. We are who God says we are and not what the world or other people might say we are. As much as we as parents might know it in our hearts, hear about it at church, or read it in our Bibles, it’s so important to remind ourselves and our children daily what our identity is in Christ. This week one of my favorite Christian influencers, Lacy Abercrombie, shared a list of Christian affirmations she reads over herself every morning and it stuck with me. I typed up the list and have been reading it over myself and my kids ever since and I think it could really benefit you and your family too. So I’ve created a free downloadable Christian Affirmations poster for you to print off and use and have also attached it below for you to read. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Prayers:

Lastly, I like to end each Weekly Fun Plan with some example prayers for your week. One is to pray with your kids, maybe before they get on the bus in the morning, before a meal, or before bed, and the other prayer is for you, the parent, to pray over your kids throughout the week.

Prayer to say with your kids this week: 

Dear God, Thank You for making me one of a kind. Help me to remember how special I am because of my differences and show me how I can use my unique talents and gifts to serve you and others. Amen.

Prayer to pray over your kids this week: 

Dear Heavenly Father, thank you for the snow and all the other reminders in creation that help us to see how special and unique we are, and how wonderful of a creator You are. Thank you for all the ways that my child is special and unique. Help me to encourage my child to use their talents and gifts to glorify You and do great things for Your kingdom. Amen.
