If your child loves jewelry, animals, fishing, or just being crafty in general, they’ll love this super easy Bead Fish Necklace craft. It requires very few supplies, can be personalized to each of your kids’ creative tastes, and is great for any fishing, camping, or underwater-themed event.

It’s also the perfect craft for a children’s church or kid’s ministry event. The fish symbol is often used to represent Christianity in general, can be a reminder of the feeding of the 5,000 or Jonah stories in the Bible, or like in my most recent blog post it can represent our call as Christians to go and be “fishers of men”. And if you’re looking for more Bible-based crafts and activities like this to do with your kids on a daily basis, be sure to check out my full blog post “Weekly Fun Plan: Fishers of Men”.

Steps:

  • Let your child choose their favorite color pipe cleaner. Have them string some beads into the center of the pipe cleaner, pushing them tightly together. (The number of beads they choose will determine the size of their fish. So if they want a larger fish use more beads, if they want it small like the one I made use about 15 beads)

  • Bend the pipe cleaner making a loop with the beaded area, then twist the pipe cleaner around a few times to secure it.
  • Now you can either bend at each end of the pipe cleaner to create 2 new little loops that will be the tail fins OR simply cut the excess off the two pieces and leave them straight (this will have a sharper edge) (View the two photos below to see the difference)
  • Once your fish is complete, measure out some string or yarn to the length you desire for your necklace, loop it through your fish, tie a knot at the end, and you’re done.
