Looking for a fun & easy craft to do with your little ones this week? You’re going to love this Rainbow Rainstick!

This craft only requires a few supplies, is very easy to make, and once finished makes a colorful instrument to use for your next family jam session.

These rain sticks are the perfect craft for any Sunday School/Kids Ministry lesson on the story of Noah’s Ark. For parents, these are a fun simple way to start a discussion with your kids about Noah and God’s promises in the Bible.

You could also take this craft one step further and use it as a tool to help your kids memorize this week’s Bible verse Genesis 9:13 by writing the reference or the verse onto the rainstick.

“I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth.” Genesis 9:13

Supplies:

Steps:

  • To start, cover one end of a cardboard tube with duct tape.
  • Using aluminum foil, crunch some pieces into balls or snake shapes and place them into your cardboard tube.
  • Place a funnel at the opening of your cardboard tube and pour in some dry rice. Use as much as you’d like but I used about 1 Cup of rice in mine.
  • Once you’re done pouring in the rice seal the remaining open end of your tube with more duct tape.
  • The last step is to decorate your new rainstick. This can be done in various ways:
    • One way is to measure and cut out strips of colored construction paper and tape them around your rain stick until completely covered.
  • Another way is to color your tube with markers, crayons, or colored pencils.
  • Lastly, you could paint your rainstick. This is the messiest way to decorate and takes longer to dry.
  • Once you’ve finished decorating your rainstick gently flip your stick back and forth to make beautiful soothing rain sounds or shake it fast for more of a maraca sound.
