These Coffee Filter Whale Suncatchers only require a few supplies, are fun to make and are the perfect craft for spring/summer. Use your favorite cool-toned colors and create beautiful underwater art.
The tie-dye effect on the suncatcher is created by using water. There are multiple ways you can achieve this effect:
- Paint the water on with a paintbrush
- Spray the coffee filters with a spray bottle
- Use a small dropper and drip water onto your artwork
Once completed you can hang them up and they make super cute springtime or summertime decor. Do this craft for a Sunday school/Kids Ministry or VBS lesson on Jonah and the whale or use them for an ocean/underwater-themed party or event.
If you’re looking for more whale-themed crafts, snacks, activities, and my corresponding children’s Bible Lesson check out this week’s Weekly Fun Plan: Jonah and the Whale.

Supplies:
Steps:
- To start, color a coffee filter with your favorite cool-toned color markers, covering the entire surface.
- Cool tones include: blues, purples, and greens
- Set your colored coffee filter onto a tray, paper towel, or plate and blend the marker using water. You can do this in multiple ways, choose whichever option is best for you.
- Paint the water on with a paintbrush
- Spray the coffee filters with a spray bottle
- Use a small dropper and drip water onto your artwork
- Set your coffee filter aside to dry.
- Print off my Whale Suncatcher Cutout PDF and cut out the whale shape.
- Note: I have placed the whale graphic in the corner of the PDF so if you need to print off multiple whales and want to save paper, rotate the same piece of paper in your printer to fit 4 whales on one sheet.
- Once your filter is completely dry, glue the whale cutout to the center of your coffee filter and hang it on a window to enjoy!
