This week on the blog we’re working on memorizing Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” We’re also focusing on the theme that The Bible is our Ultimate Tool. So what better way to drive this lesson home than to make our own lantern suncatchers?
These lantern suncatchers are easy to make, mess-free, and are meant to be displayed on a window or sliding door. So every time you and your kids see the sun shining through your lanterns you can be reminded of our ultimate tool, the Bible, and can work on memorizing Psalm 119:105.
Supplies:
Steps:
- Start by taking some orange, yellow, or both colors of tissue paper and cut it into small pieces (approximately 1” squares) then set those pieces aside.
- Cut a piece of contact paper approximately 7″ x 14″, and fold it in half with the paper backing facing in.
- Stencil out a shape for the “glass” of your lantern on one of the folded sides.
- Peel back just the stenciled half of the contact paper and have your child place the colored tissue paper squares wherever they want inside your stenciled area.
- Carefully peal back the rest of the contact paper backing and fold the contact paper together sealing in the tissue paper. You should now have a big laminated-looking piece.
- Cut on your stenciled lines to remove the excess contact paper and create the “glass” shape of your lantern.
- Now let your child pick out their favorite color construction paper to use for the top and the base of your lantern. Draw some simple shapes for the top of your lantern and a base. See the picture for inspiration.
- Cut out your top and base shapes and tape them to the suncatcher piece you made.
- Either leave it there or let your child decorate their lantern with the Psalm 119:105 Bible verse, some stickers, markers, etc. The choice is up to you. Then hang your new beautiful lantern suncatcher up on a window or door and watch the sun shine through!
