Welcome to this week’s “Weekly Fun Plan: Sweet Truths”. If you haven’t already, I recommend you read my introductory blog post, “Faith-filled Fun: What Is It? And Why I Started It”. That post will give you some background on this blog and a little more in-depth explanation of my Weekly Fun Plans and how to use them.

This Week’s Theme: Sweet Truths

Well, it’s been a while since I last shared a new Weekly Fun Plan, so I appreciate the patience! Life has been full in the best ways as I’ve been settling into my new role as Kids Ministry Director at my church and getting my own little ones ready for kindergarten and preschool this fall. But I’m excited to jump back in with this week’s theme: Sweet Truths!

Just like a surprise trip to get ice cream can turn a bad day around for a child, this week, we learn how the sweet truths about God can help us when things go wrong! Centered on Psalm 34:8, this Bible lesson reminds us (and our kids) that God’s goodness is something we can truly taste and see, even in the hard moments.

We will cover questions like “Who can help us when things go wrong?” ” Where can we look when we have questions about God?” and “What are some ‘sweet truths’ about God?” It’s an important lesson, and I think you and your family or class will love discussing this topic with some fun ice cream-themed crafts, snacks, and activities perfect for winding down this summer season!

If you try anything in this week’s plan, don’t forget to share your experiences on social media! Tag us @faithfilledfun on Instagram, @chelseawinterstein on TikTok, or use #faithfilledfun.

Bible Lesson: What to Read or Watch this week

Since this week, we are learning about some sweet truths. Here are some great resources to read/watch:

If you have young children (ages 0-8):

If you have older children/teens (ages 9-18):

  • Read the same Bible verses listed above, but don’t give them the ‘truths’; instead, have them see if they can figure them out for themselves. Then have them answer the discussion questions for this week’s lesson.

Bible Lesson: Questions to Ask Your Kids/Discuss this week

If you read the recommended Bible verses or watched the YouTube video, your kids should be able to answer this week’s question:

Who can help me when things go wrong? Answer: God always helps me.

If you have little ones (ages 0-5):

I would focus on that one question first. Once they understand, move on to the additional discussion questions below.

If you have older children (ages 6 & up):

Here are some additional questions you can discuss with them throughout the week:

  • Where can we look when we have questions about God? (the Bible)
  • What are some ‘sweet truths’ about God? (listed above)
  • Is there anything God can’t do? (No, God can do anything)
  • Which ‘sweet truth’ is most comforting to you?

Bible Lesson: Memory Verse

Memorizing scripture is vital to teaching our children at a young age. Recalling and reciting scripture that they’ve memorized will help them as they grow and go through trials in life. It will also encourage them, equip them to go out and be little disciples of Jesus, and strengthen their faith as they age.

This week, let’s have your kids work on memorizing Psalm 34:8

Memorizing scripture is so much easier for kids if you can find a way to make it fun. Here are some different ideas to try as a family to help memorize this week’s verse:

  • Come up with some simple motions for each word of the verse and make a cheer or dance out of it.
  • Come up with your own melody and create a song out of it.
  • Make it a game. Start by saying one word or phrase of the verse at a time and have your kids repeat after you until you’ve gotten through the whole verse. Then repeat the process, saying the words differently every time. Examples: slow, fast, in a silly voice, quiet, loud, etc.

Once your child/children have it, I recommend practicing reciting the verse each morning over breakfast, before they leave for school, and maybe even before bed. Make it a part of your routine, and you’ll be amazed at how fast they will begin to pick it up.

Activities:

With our theme this week, “Sweet Truths”, here are a few extra ideas for activities to do with your children:

  • Go out to a local ice cream shop as a family.
  • Make a list of even more sweet truths about God you can brainstorm as a family/group.
  • Make a poster of all the sweet truths you came up with and hang it up in your home to be reminded of them daily.

Parenting Tip of the Week:

As much as our kids need to learn about the sweet truths of God, it’s also important for them to be reminded about some sweet truths God says about them! Our identity and our children’s identity should always come from Christ first and foremost. We are who God says we are and not what the world or other people might say we are. As much as we as parents might know it in our hearts, hear about it at church, or read it in our Bibles, it’s so important to remind ourselves and our children daily what our identity is in Christ. So I’ve created a free downloadable Christian Affirmations poster for you to print off and use, and have also attached it below for you to read. I hope you love it as much as I do!

Prayers:

Lastly, I like to end each Weekly Fun Plan with some prayers for your week. One is to pray with your kids, maybe before they get on the bus in the morning, before a meal, or before bed, and the other prayer is for you, the parent, to pray over your kids throughout the week.

Prayer to say with your kids this week:

“Dear God, thank You for Your sweet truths that we can find in the Bible. When things go wrong, help me to trust You. Thank You for always being there for me. Amen.”

Prayer to pray over your kids this week:

“Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for the gift of my child(ren). As we learn about Your sweet truths this week, help me to show them how good You are in every part of life. When hard moments come, remind me to point them back to You and to trust in Your promises together. May my child grow to taste and see that You are good, and find comfort in You always. In Jesus’ name, Amen.”
